Muay Thai

Muay Thai is an ancient Thai martial art that dates back over 1000 years, to an age when Thai warriors used it to defend their country from Burmese invaders. Whether practiced competitively or for recreation, this highly exciting martial art and combat sport can transform one’s physique through intensive training techniques. Thai boxing has been used for centuries to build strength, endurance, power of concentration, determination, self-confidence and discipline. The Muay Thai curriculum at Five Points Academy follows the teaching syllabus of the Muay Thai International Association and the grading system of the International Federation of Muay Thai-Amateur – the recognized sanctioning body for Olympic Muay Thai. For nearly 20 years, Five Points Academy has produced champions at the national and international level, contributed members to multiple US national teams to international amateur competition, and provided recreational students with the knowledge and skill to achieve a more healthy, active lifestyle.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art form, combat sports, and self defense system that focuses on grappling — especially ground fighting. It developed from Kodokan Judo ground fighting fundamentals taught to Carlos Gracie, the founder of modern day BJJ. BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker, person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant through proper technique, leverage, and taking the fight to the ground. It is considered not only a martial art but a sport taught to build physical fitness, character, and ultimately a way of life. Five Points Academy is pleased to be the NYC home of the Workshop BJJ Association.

Judo, meaning “gentle way”, is a modern Japanese martial art that originated in Japan in the late nineteenth century. The soft method is characterized by the indirect application of force to defeat an opponent. More specifically, it is the principle of using one’s opponent’s strength against him and adapting well to changing circumstances. Jūdōka are ranked according to skill and knowledge of judo, and their rank is reflected by their belt color. This ranking system was introduced into the martial arts by judo’s founder and has since been widely adopted by modern martial arts.
